On 2 November 1917, Lord Balfour signed, on behalf of the British government, what has become known as the 'Balfour Declaration'. It was an expression in favour of the possibility of the establishment of a Jewish state in an area of land that had once been called Israel, later Judah or Judaea, and finally Palestine.
